Junxiu Tang唐俊修

I am a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Science of Science & Innovation (CSSI), Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, working with Prof. Dashun Wang. I received my Ph.D. in Computer Science and Technology from Zhejiang University (ZJU) in 2024, advised by Prof. Yingcai Wu at the Interactive Data Group, and my B.Eng. in Digital Media Technology from ZJU in 2019. During my Ph.D., I visited the Aviz team at Inria, working with Dr. Petra Isenberg.

My research studies how interactive visualization helps people communicate and make sense of data. It spans three connected areas: data-driven insight extraction, through visual analytics for domain experts; narrative development, through storytelling and communication around data; and expressive creation, through data-driven art and video that bring data to a broad audience. At CSSI, my current work combines the validation of AI-for-science systems with decision-support tools for research-funding stakeholders. I am also increasingly interested in how AI can support research, design, and collaboration.

Impact

At CSSI I develop and maintain InnovationInsights, an AI-powered visual analytics platform that helps universities find researchers and research with untapped commercial potential, onboarding their technology transfer offices and turning their feedback into new features. It runs as part of the Northwestern Innovation Institute’s Bridge program, with about twenty partner universities, among them Columbia, Cornell, Michigan, UCLA, and the University of Chicago.
